What is bonded (seamless) construction?

Bonded construction joins fabric with adhesive film and heat instead of stitches, leaving a flat surface with no seam line. It suits polo shirts, activewear and lightweight outerwear. Because film, temperature, pressure and dwell time are validated for each fabric pairing, bonded orders start at 200 pieces per style per colour.

How bonding replaces stitching

A conventional seam passes needle and thread through two plies. A bonded join places a thermoplastic film between them and runs them through a heated press at a set pressure for a set dwell time; the film melts, wets both faces and sets as it cools.

What changes is what is absent: no needle holes, no thread bulk, no seam ridge against the skin. Bonding does not replace every seam — a join carrying load is still sewn, and the two are often combined.

Which garments suit bonded construction

Six processes come up in bonded programmes, chosen by what the join has to do:

Examples sit on seamless bonded styles; polo shirt styles gives the sewn comparison. Bonded joins also appear on yoga wear.

Why the minimum is 200 pieces

Most styles start at 100 pieces per style per colour; bonded and seam-sealed builds start at 200. The difference is a validation step a sewn style does not carry.

  • Film is matched to the fabric. Knit construction, fibre content and finish change how a film flows, so it is chosen for that pairing.
  • Temperature, pressure and dwell time are set and recorded. Too little heat and the join does not hold; too much and the film strikes through.
  • Press time per join is longer than a seam. Each join is held for a fixed dwell.
  • The bonded sample is the reference. It fixes film, parameters and which joins are bonded; bulk is built to it after written approval.

Counted per style and per colour; rules for every category are on minimum order quantity.

Processes that run alongside bonding

Bonding and seam sealing, laser cutting, heat transfer, flatlock and washing all run in our own plants. Each garment is built to your specification and the approved sample, not a fixed construction. See seamless polo shirt manufacturing.

Care and washing for bonded garments

The film is thermoplastic, so heat is what matters after the garment leaves the factory. The usual practice is a moderate machine wash and drying away from direct heat, avoiding high-temperature tumble drying and dry-cleaning solvents, since either can soften the film. Care wording is confirmed to the film and fabric on your order.

Sampling takes 3–7 days and bulk takes 15–25 days after written approval, both excluding shipping, with inline and final inspection to AQL 2.5. Send the garment, tech pack or sketch marking the joins to bond to contact SLSPOLO, or read how to get a quote.

Questions buyers ask next

Is bonded the same as seamless knitting?

No. Bonded construction joins cut panels with adhesive film and heat, while seamless knitting produces a shaped panel on the machine with no side seam to close. Both remove stitch lines from parts of a garment, but they are different processes and are specified separately at quotation stage.

Why does a bonded style start at 200 pieces?

Adhesive film, temperature, pressure and dwell time are validated for each fabric pairing before bulk cutting starts, which adds a set-up stage a sewn style does not carry. The higher minimum covers that validation and the press time.

Can bonded joins be combined with stitching?

Yes. Many styles bond some joins and stitch others, such as a bonded placket or hem with a sewn shoulder or armhole. Which join uses which method is fixed on the approved sample, so it is worth marking each seam on the tech pack before sampling starts.

How should bonded garments be washed?

A moderate machine wash and drying away from direct heat, avoiding high-temperature tumble drying and dry-cleaning solvents, since either can soften the adhesive film. The care wording is confirmed to the film and fabric used on your order before packing.
