Clothing Branding Package: Labels, Hangtags and Badges
A full branding package is every place your name touches the garment: the woven main label at the neck, the care label in the side seam, the hangtag, a sleeve or chest badge, a jacron or silicone patch, and the polybag and carton mark. The trim minimums for these sit on a separate count from the garment minimum.
What does a full branding package actually cover?
It covers seven touchpoints and one document. The touchpoints are the woven main label, the care label, the hangtag, the badge, the patch, the polybag and the carton mark. The document is the label schedule in your tech pack, which fixes wording, position, size, fold and colour before anything is ordered. The knitwear tech pack template places that row next to construction and packing.
Where does each brand touchpoint sit on a finished garment?
The table below is the working map. Positions are standard for knitwear; wording, size and colour are yours to set.
| Touchpoint | Position | How it is made | Minimum relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woven main label | Centre back neck, under the neck tape | Damask or twill weave, cut, folded, sewn into the neck seam | 1,000 pieces per design, counted separately |
| Care label | Left side seam, inside the seam allowance | Printed satin tape, folded, sewn into the seam | Separate from the garment count |
| Hangtag | Neck or buttonhole | Printed card, one or two sides, swift tack or string | 1,000 pieces per design, counted separately |
| Sleeve or chest badge | Upper sleeve, or left chest | Embroidered patch, edge-finished, sewn or bonded | 300 pieces per design, counted separately |
| Jacron patch | Back waistband or hem | Paper-backed jacron, debossed, sewn down on four sides | Separate from the garment count |
| Silicone badge | Sleeve, chest or hem, flat or raised | Moulded silicone, colour-filled, applied by adhesive or stitch | 300 pieces per design, counted separately |
| Polybag and carton mark | Outside the folded garment, and on the shipper | Printed polybag, size sticker, printed carton | Follows order quantity, no trim minimum |
Do trim minimums add to the garment minimum?
No. Trim minimums are counted on their own and are not stacked on top of the garment minimum. A 100 pcs polo order stays a 100 pcs order once a custom woven label is added; the label is placed against its own 1,000 pieces per design, and the garment count does not move.
Woven labels and hangtags run at 1,000 pieces per design. Embroidered badges and silicone badges run at 300 pieces per design. The garment minimum stays at 100 pcs per style per colour, and 200 pcs on bonded or seam-sealed builds. How the minimum is counted sets out the full table.
A worked example: one polo style in navy, 100 pcs, with a woven label, a care label, a hangtag and a chest badge. The 100 pcs meets the garment minimum. The label order is 1,000 pieces, the hangtag order is 1,000 pieces, the badge order is 300 pieces, and none of those figures raises the 100 pcs.
How are woven labels and care labels specified?
A woven label needs a fold type, a width in millimetres, the ground colour, the number of yarn colours, the backing and the exact wording. End fold, centre fold and mitre fold sit differently in the neck seam, so the fold is a production instruction rather than a detail. Yarn colour count moves the price: a two-colour label and a five-colour label are not the same article.
The care label carries fibre percentages, wash and dry symbols, origin and size. Its wording has to match the fibre content printed on the hangtag and the content on the test report you hold for that fabric. Moving a 100% cotton body to a 60/40 blend is not one edit; it is a new care label, a new hangtag and a new test reference.
What changes with hangtags, jacron patches and silicone badges?
A hangtag carries the barcode and the price field, so its artwork has a second layer beyond the logo: barcode number, size, colour name and composition. One hangtag design is one 1,000 pieces even when it serves six styles, and printing both sides does not create a second design.
Jacron and silicone are moulded rather than printed. Fine lines close up in a mould, so badge artwork is redrawn at a heavier stroke before the tool is cut, and gradients become flat colour fields. Packing closes the same package: polybag, size sticker and carton mark sit in one tech pack row with the labels, and the packing and shipping notes cover how the carton mark travels.
How do brand trims fit into sampling?
Sampling runs 3 to 7 days once the tech pack, the fabric and the label schedule are confirmed in writing. In the first sample the labels are often plain mock-ups; the approved woven label and hangtag arrive for the PP sample, which is the one you sign off. Bulk runs 15 to 25 days from written PP approval.
Trims ordered after the PP sample is signed become a second sampling stage, and the schedule moves with them. Send artwork and wording with the tech pack and approve them in writing. The sample approval checklist lists the label items to sign, and the fee is credited against the first bulk order when a single style reaches 300 pcs. A first order at 100 pcs per style is still a 100-piece order.
What belongs in a tech pack for labels and trims?
Field 9 of a tech pack is labels and trims: main label position and wording, care label wording and position, hangtag artwork and attachment, plus drawcord, zip, buttons and thread colour. Field 7 of an RFQ asks the same question from the buying side, and it is the field most often left blank. The twelve RFQ fields explain what each entry changes.
Write the difference between mill-stock and custom on that row. A stock label with one yarn colour is a different line item from a custom label with four, and a badge drawn for embroidery is not interchangeable with a moulded badge of the same shape.
Where does private label stop and wholesale begin?
Wholesale buys a finished garment on the supplier’s pattern with the supplier’s labels, so you are buying availability. Private label keeps that pattern and puts your woven label, care label, hangtag, barcode and carton mark on it, so you are buying identity. The three ways to buy clothing you can put your name on separate the layers by one question: how much of the garment is yours.
OEM and ODM split along the same line. OEM and ODM compared covers the difference, and whether private label is offered at all answers the first question most buyers send. Most first orders sit in the private label layer, with the pattern unchanged and every brand surface replaced; a hoodie built that way is described on the hoodie manufacturer page.
What goes wrong when branding is added late?
- Label wording approved after the PP sample, so the neck label and the care label no longer agree with the fabric on the sign-off sheet.
- A barcode that was never scanned at the retail till, printed on 1,000 hangtags.
- A carton mark carrying the previous style code, which stops a warehouse from receiving the shipment.
- Badge artwork sent as a photograph rather than a vector file, which is redrawn before a mould is cut.
- One label design split across two styles without a note, so the 1,000 pieces are raised as two separate orders.
Each item is a document, not a machine problem, and each is closed by written approval before the sample stage that uses it.
SLSPOLO has run knitwear and cut-and-sew production in Dongguan since 2009, across 18,000+ m² of workshop with 180+ staff and a monthly output of 150,000 to 200,000 pcs. The factory works to ISO 9001, inspects every order in full and accepts to AQL 2.5, and takes orders from 100 pcs per style per colour, with branding on the same schedule as the garment.
What do buyers ask most about a branding package?
Does a woven label raise the 100-piece garment minimum?
No. The 100 pcs minimum is counted per style and per colour on the garment, and the woven label is ordered against its own 1,000 pieces per design. The two counts stay separate, so a 100 pcs order with a custom neck label and a custom hangtag is still a 100 pcs order on the garment side.
Can one hangtag design cover several styles?
Yes, when the artwork is identical. One hangtag design is one 1,000 pieces, and those pieces can be spread across several styles in the same order, since the minimum sits on the design rather than the garment. A second colourway of the same card is a second design with its own minimum.
How long does a custom label add to sampling?
Sampling stays at 3 to 7 days when the label schedule, the wording and the artwork arrive with the tech pack. In that window the first sample may carry mock-up labels, and the woven label and hangtag arrive for the PP sample. Artwork sent after approval starts a further stage.
What happens when two styles use the same fabric?
Two styles are two minimums, even on one fabric. The same 320 gsm fleece cut to two patterns is two styles at 100 pcs each, and each carries its own label order unless one design is shared. A colour change inside a style is a separate minimum again.
Can leftover labels carry into a repeat order?
Trim quantities are booked per order against the approved artwork, and whether any balance from a previous run can be carried forward is confirmed with the trim supplier at the time of the booking. Send the same approved artwork reference with a repeat so the label order is matched to the one already signed off.
Which files does the artwork need to be in?
Vector files for anything printed or moulded, with fonts converted to outlines and each colour named to a Pantone TCX reference. Embroidery badges need a digitised stitch file, and hangtags need the barcode as a text field rather than an image. A photograph of a sketch is read, then redrawn before set-up.
