Garment Washing: What a Wash Changes and How to Specify It

Garment washing is applied to the made-up garment, after it has been cut and sewn. That one fact decides how the step is specified. The wash is not a fabric pre-treatment, so it cannot be judged from a swatch on a desk, and the only reference that holds is a sealed sample that has been through the same wash. SLSPOLO runs garment wash in house — acid wash, enzyme wash and garment dye — from 100 pieces per style per colour, with samples in 3–7 days and bulk in 15–25 days after sample approval and deposit.

The Wash Is Applied to the Garment, Not the Cloth

Two operations are easy to confuse and they do different jobs. Bulk cloth is pre-shrunk before cutting, which pulls the fabric back to a stable state so the allowance written into the pattern is the only movement that happens. A garment wash comes later, on the assembled piece, and it is there to change how the finished garment reads and feels.

Because the garment is already assembled when it goes into the wash, the wash is the last stage at which the finished piece can still change. That is not a reason to avoid it. It is the reason the wash belongs in the sampling conversation rather than in a note added to a purchase order once the bulk has been booked.

Three Things a Wash Moves: Size, Hand, Colour

Size. Once a sample has been through the wash, it is measured again and the numbers go to you. Your size chart is what the garment measures after washing, not before, because that is the number your customers will check with a tape measure.

Hand. A washed hand feel is the part of the step you can only judge with your hands, which is why a swatch is not enough: cloth that has been through a wash does not handle like cloth straight off the roll. Acid wash, enzyme wash and garment dye are the routes we run in house, and each one has to be judged on your fabric rather than described in the abstract.

Colour. Garment dye is applied to the made-up garment, so colour on a dyed order is set at this stage and the depth it reads at is part of what you approve. Shade is checked against the reference you signed off, and it is checked again on the washed sample.

The Sealed Sample Carries the Wash Decision

We make up a sample garment in the fabric you chose, run it through a wash, and re-measure it — chest, body length and sleeve length on a top — then send the before and after readings so you can write your own tolerances into the spec. That is the moment to say whether the washed result is acceptable, because it is the only moment when correcting it costs a sample rather than a run.

The approved sample is then sealed and stays at the factory as the physical reference. Final inspection measures bulk against that garment, and cartons are sampled to AQL 2.5 for major defects. A deviation outside the agreed tolerances is remade at our cost, which is why the wash has to be settled in the sample rather than negotiated at the loading door.

The Care Label Follows the Sample, Not a Template

Care labels are printed with fibre composition, wash symbols, country of origin and your RN or CA number where the order ships to the United States or Canada. Wash-care wording is set from real wash data — the readings taken from the sample garment — rather than from a default block applied to every order.

That matters because the label has to describe the garment in the box: the fabric on this order, the finish on this order, and the route the wash actually took. Confirm the label content with the sample, at the same time as you approve the hand feel, so the two are not signed off weeks apart and left to disagree with each other.

Where the Wash Sits in the Sequence

The order runs cutting, then sewing, then wash, then finishing. The wash is declared before bulk cutting so the step is planned into the schedule rather than discovered when the garments are already assembled — a trouser that needs a garment wash is scheduled differently from one that does not.

The bulk window we quote is 15–25 days after sample approval and deposit, excluding transport, and the wash is a stage inside that window, not a second window stacked on top of it. Where a programme needs a sequence outside the normal route, we say so when we quote rather than after the deposit. Measurement against the size spec, needle detection on the packing line and AQL 2.5 carton sampling all happen after the wash, on the washed garment.

What to Send With a Wash Request

Six things make a wash enquiry answerable in one round: the reference style or tech pack, the quantity per colour, the size range, the fabric you have in mind or the fabric direction you want, the wash route, and the hand feel you are aiming for. Add a colour reference if the depth the wash lands at matters to the range.

Say whether the care label is printed by us or supplied, and name the market if it needs an RN or CA number. If you already own a garment that shows the finish you want, send it — a physical reference is faster to work from than a description, and it is recorded in the order file with the rest of the approved details.

Send the style closest to your target from the T-shirt range together with the quantity per colour, the size range and the wash result you are aiming for, and we will reply with fabric options, a costed quote and a sampling date. The bulk window is explained in more detail on how long bulk production takes, the wider sequence is on our production timeline, and the information that gets a quote right the first time is listed under how to get a quote.

Other processes on the same floor: the manufacturing overview, cutting and sewing, heat transfer printing.

Frequently asked questions

Is garment washing done before or after the garment is sewn?

After. A garment wash is applied to the made-up garment, so it follows sewing and precedes finishing. Fabric is pre-shrunk before cutting, but that is a separate operation on the cloth and it does not replace a garment wash. Because the wash acts on the assembled piece, the result is judged on a sealed sample rather than on a swatch, and the size chart describes the garment as it measures after the wash.

Will a wash change the measurements I approved?

It can, which is why the sample is washed and re-measured before you approve it. We send the before and after readings for chest, body length and sleeve length so you can decide what tolerance is acceptable and write it into the spec. Your size chart then describes the washed garment, which is what a customer measures. Bulk is checked against the sealed, washed sample at inspection, and deviations outside the agreed tolerance are remade at our cost.

Can the care label be printed for our market?

Yes. Care labels are printed with fibre composition, wash symbols, country of origin and the RN or CA number where the order ships to the United States or Canada. The wording is set from the wash readings taken on your sample garment rather than from a standard block, and it is approved at the same time as the hand feel so the label and the garment describe the same thing. Tell us at enquiry whether we print the label or you supply it.

Does a wash add to the production lead time?

The bulk window we quote is 15–25 days after sample approval and deposit, excluding transport, and a wash step is planned inside that window rather than quoted as a second block on top of it. The wash is declared before bulk cutting so it can be scheduled from the start. If a programme needs a sequence that does not fit the normal route, we say so when we quote, before you commit to the order.

Which wash routes can you run in house?

Acid wash, enzyme wash and garment dye, all applied to the made-up garment. Which one suits an order depends on the fabric and on the hand feel and colour depth you are aiming for, so the route is named in the enquiry and then fixed on the sealed sample. We do not quote a wash from a description alone: the sample is washed, re-measured and sent with its readings, and that sample becomes the reference for inspection.
